Generative AI and Foundation Models

Today, many AI tools have glitches (a third arm that pops up in a photo!) or take a long time to process requests. This is fine for most consumers, but more frustrating if you’re trying to monetize the content. To serve those power users, we expect many companies will add “pro” tiers with higher quality service—as ChatGPT has already done. On top of this, startups training their own models have raised billions of dollars in venture capital — the majority of which (up to 80-90% in early rounds) is typically also spent with the cloud providers.

For animated characters, it also involves creating an internal “skeleton”, and then creating animations on top of that skeleton. Coding tools like Copilot may provide moderate performance improvements for engineers, but won’t have the same impact… at least anytime soon. While AI-native services may be able to command higher prices, it’s generally more expensive for those companies to serve their customers. Supporting AI-native services includes paying compute costs for training and inference, as well as compensating human labor to address the long tail of use cases. In short, offering more personalized products will cost more, but consumers will be willing to pay much more for those products, which should translate to a larger overall profit pool.

Once trained, these models can generate new data, such as text, that is similar in style and structure to the training data. ChatGPT can generate coherent and contextually relevant responses to prompts, making it suitable for various applications. Finally, most generative models today would be cost prohibitive to run in the cloud at the 24/7, global scale that modern games operations require. To scale cost-effectively, application developers will likely need to figure out ways to shift model workloads to end-user devices, but this will take time. We’re still early in applying generative AI to games, and many legal, ethical, and technical hurdles need to be solved before most of these ideas can be put into production.
