Generative AI Brings Cost of Creation Close to Zero, Andreessen Horowitzs Martin Casado Says

Then, to get to an acceptable end result, the author must review the output, iterate on the prompts, and potentially re-write entire sections. There have been academic papers exploring the idea of using AI to generate “foley” in film (e.g. footsteps) but few commercial products in gaming yet. Special thanks to Jack Soslow, Jay Rughani, Marco Mascorro, Martin Casado, Rajko Radovanovic, and Vijay Pande for their contributions to this piece, and to the entire a16z team for an always informative discussion about the latest in AI. And thanks to Sonal Chokshi and the crypto team for building a long series of canons at the firm. While there isn’t a lot of formal education available on this topic yet, we pulled out some of the most useful resources we’ve found. AI is likely to play a major role in games, which our partners have written about extensively.

These AI characters are equipped with the capability to interact with one another in a convincingly human-like manner, creating an intriguing social dynamic within the virtual environment. Behind the scenes, AI Town relies on a robust tech stack, including Convex for its back-end serverless framework, Pinecone for vector storage, Clerk for authentication, OpenAI for natural language text generation, and Fly for deployment. “During a gold rush, sell shovels.” The mega cloud providers and GPU companies Yakov Livshits have a very high probability of minting huge sums of money over the next couple of decades irrespective of which Gen AI app or LLM builder wins. “Our vision is to democratize creativity and enable anyone to create amazing things with AI.” After login, they can use Ideogram to type in their prompt and select a number of rendering styles like anime, dark fantasy, or graffiti to generate an image. However, amid the enthusiasm for AI’s transformative power, some concerns persist. As AI increasingly influences human lives, questions surrounding ethics, privacy, and data security come to the forefront. Striking the right balance between AI-assisted productivity and maintaining human agency will be a significant challenge for society.

  • Incredible performance and adoption, combined with a blistering pace of innovation, suggest we could be in the early days of a cycle that will transform our lives and economy at levels not seen since the microchip and the internet.

Starting Zibra AI with a team, we could realize that its products could revolutionize the game development process by automating many routine tasks for developers and artists. As a result, they could focus on the main thing – generating and implementing breakthrough ideas and technologies that boost the game development industry, ‘ Mr Dmytrenko explains. Generative AI applications are built using foundation models, which are expansive artificial neural networks inspired by the billions of neurons connected in the human brain. These models can process extremely large and varied sets of unstructured data and perform more than one task and they have specific purposes.

The first wave of generative AI apps are starting to reach scale, but struggle with retention and differentiation

This all said, existing markets are only a proof point of value, and perhaps merely a launch point for generative AI. Historically, when economics and capabilities shift this dramatically, as was the case with the Internet, we see the emergence of entirely new behaviors and markets that are both impossible to predict and much larger than what preceded them. In order for the startup to have sufficient correctness early on, it hires humans to perform the function it hopes the AI will automate over time. Often, this is part of an escalation path where a first cut of the AI will handle 80% of the common use cases, and humans manage the tail. There are exceptions, of course, such as the new behaviors introduced by home voice assistants.

An author can register their novel on Story Protocol, then sell rights for translations, spin-offs, or adaptations. Recognizing this, venture capitalists increasingly divert their attention and capital to AI-focused initiatives. This flexibility allows for various potential applications, from simple projects to scalable, multi-player games. For Visa+ to be successful, Visa needs to figure out how to convince consumers to create yet another payname and use the service. Part of this effort will be up to marketing, but the company also needs to open up a new use case for consumers, solve a common friction point, or both (e.g., if Visa+ made it easier for gig workers to receive payment). Visa+ also needs to account for the absence of CashApp and Zelle, which are used by 30-40% of the U.S. population), as well as major wallet providers like Google Pay and Apple Pay, from the service.

It’s also worth noting that AI is often held to a higher goalpost than simply what humans can achieve (why change the system if the new one isn’t significantly better?). So, even in cases where AI is obviously better, it’s still at a disadvantage. General LLM chatbots represent 68% of total consumer traffic to the top 50 list.

Since the beginning of 2022, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite has declined 23% (versus the S&P 500’s 14% decline) and global venture funding reached a thirteen-quarter low in Q1 ’23. Today’s market represents a radically different fundraising climate—one not seen in nearly 15 years. Many founders find themselves in uncharted territory as concerns linger around the overall health of the fundraising environment, from venture capital to growth equity. Last month, Visa announced its Visa+ initiative to connect peer-to-peer (P2P) payment platforms. Launching later this year, Visa+ will allow users of different P2P payment services to pay each other directly after they create a personalized “payname,” or handle, to connect their accounts.

It’s incredibly powerful to have a conversation with someone who listens to you and responds, and AI chatbots can play this role. Now working on Ideogram, the team said its mission is to help people become more creative through generative AI by developing tools that will make creative expression more accessible. Its text-to-image platform launched today, offering similar capabilities to OpenAI’s DALL-E image-generation platform. In the 6 months since its launch, ChatGPT reached an estimated 230-million-plus worldwide monthly active users (MAUs) per Yipit. It took Facebook until 2009 to achieve a comparable 197 million MAUs—more than 5 years after its initial launch to the Ivy League and 3 years after the social network became available to the general public. Of course, there are narrower use cases that are more compelling, such as trucking or well-defined campus routes. Also, the economics are getting better all the time and are likely to surpass humans soon.

Generative AI and Foundation Models

Today, many AI tools have glitches (a third arm that pops up in a photo!) or take a long time to process requests. This is fine for most consumers, but more frustrating if you’re trying to monetize the content. To serve those power users, we expect many companies will add “pro” tiers with higher quality service—as ChatGPT has already done. On top of this, startups training their own models have raised billions of dollars in venture capital — the majority of which (up to 80-90% in early rounds) is typically also spent with the cloud providers.

For animated characters, it also involves creating an internal “skeleton”, and then creating animations on top of that skeleton. Coding tools like Copilot may provide moderate performance improvements for engineers, but won’t have the same impact… at least anytime soon. While AI-native services may be able to command higher prices, it’s generally more expensive for those companies to serve their customers. Supporting AI-native services includes paying compute costs for training and inference, as well as compensating human labor to address the long tail of use cases. In short, offering more personalized products will cost more, but consumers will be willing to pay much more for those products, which should translate to a larger overall profit pool.

Once trained, these models can generate new data, such as text, that is similar in style and structure to the training data. ChatGPT can generate coherent and contextually relevant responses to prompts, making it suitable for various applications. Finally, most generative models today would be cost prohibitive to run in the cloud at the 24/7, global scale that modern games operations require. To scale cost-effectively, application developers will likely need to figure out ways to shift model workloads to end-user devices, but this will take time. We’re still early in applying generative AI to games, and many legal, ethical, and technical hurdles need to be solved before most of these ideas can be put into production.
